Watering the crops…

A center pivot.

I was driving by this field the other day with the center pivot running, watering the crop.  The sun was reflecting off the spraying water and it looked like a hot summer day.  The main source of water for crops in this area is the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project, which diverts water from the Columbia River.  The other source of water, for farms a little further north, is deep wells, wherein wells are drilled about 1400 feet deep, which pull water from the Odessa Subarea Aquifer – an underground water source.  The Odessa is running out of water – it is being used faster than it can be replenished naturally.  This is a very arid area with only around seven inches of rainfall in a given year, so for crops to grow the farmers rely heavily on irrigation water.  That was probably more than you wanted to know…
